What should Chinese composition tuition help with?
Read a recent piece without correcting it first. Can you follow the event or argument? Does each paragraph have a purpose? Are weak sentences hiding a clear idea, or is the idea itself unclear? These questions help separate planning from language problems.
A learner who can tell an engaging story aloud may need support turning speech into written sentences. Another may know many expressions but struggle to build a coherent sequence. Ask the tutor to explain the main obstacle using the student's own work rather than offer a generic promise of better vocabulary.
Primary and PSLE Chinese composition: plan before writing
For a story-writing task, start with the central event: who faces a problem, what choice is made and what changes as a result? Let the student explain the sequence briefly before drafting. Use the actual school task to decide what belongs in the plan.
Ask whether the course covers the child's subject, level and examination year. Standard Chinese and Higher Chinese should not be treated as interchangeable labels. SEAB's PSLE formats page lists them separately. Our P1–P6 Chinese tuition guide explains how support can change across primary school.
An original Chinese writing exercise: develop a turning point
A missed chance to help
Planning prompt: a student sees someone struggling with a bag, walks past, then decides to return. Choose why the student initially walked away and what caused the change of mind.
A simple starting sentence is 我走了几步,又停了下来。 (I walked a few steps, then stopped.) The next sentence should explain the decision, rather than add an unrelated description of the weather.
One possible continuation: 看见老人仍在吃力地提着袋子,我想起自己也曾需要别人的帮助,便转身走了回去。
Ask the learner to write a different reason or setting. Discuss how that changes the character's action and the ending.
This is an original practice prompt and illustrative sentence. It is not an official examination question, model essay or guaranteed scoring technique.
Chinese composition feedback: revise in three passes
- Meaning: can a reader understand the central event or position? Remove an unrelated detail or explain a missing step.
- Organisation: check the sequence and the purpose of each paragraph. Make the turning point or reason visible.
- Language: improve a small number of unclear sentences. Ask why the revision works and reuse the skill in a new sentence.
Correcting every error at once can obscure the main lesson. Ask the tutor which changes the learner should understand and practise first. A rewritten essay supplied by an adult is not evidence that the student can produce one independently.
Questions to ask a Chinese composition tutor
- Will each student receive feedback on their own draft?
- How much writing happens in the lesson, and what is assigned at home?
- How do you help a student generate an idea without supplying the whole essay?
- Can I see an anonymised example of feedback and the student's revision?
- How will you check whether the skill appears in a new piece of writing?
For older students, clarify whether the course teaches narrative writing, functional writing, argument or a different task required by the actual subject. Secondary Chinese and A-Level Chinese need course-specific checks.
Support Chinese writing at home without doing the work
Ask the learner to explain the plan, select one paragraph to revisit and describe what changed after feedback. Keep their original and revised versions together. At a later point, compare a new piece completed with similar levels of assistance.
Suitable reading can supply ideas and examples of how language works. The Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning publishes primary reading resources, including a 2026–2027 recommended reading list. Choose accessible books rather than insist that harder text is always better.
If understanding a passage is the main barrier, begin with Chinese comprehension support. If the learner can discuss ideas but struggles to organise them aloud, the oral practice guide offers a useful starting point.
Common questions
Does a Chinese composition class replace general Chinese tuition?
Not always. A writing-focused class may not address reading foundations, listening or oral needs. Identify the main difficulty and ask exactly what the course includes.
Are impressive phrases enough to improve Chinese composition?
No. Expressions need to fit the meaning and context. A clear sequence, relevant detail and sentences the learner understands are more useful targets than adding decorative phrases to every paragraph.
How can I compare composition class fees?
Compare teaching hours, class size, individual marking, revision opportunities and additional charges. Use written quotes and check whether feedback outside class is included.
