Chinese oral: speaking confidence and relevant answers

Ask whether the learner understands the question, has something relevant to say and can express it clearly. These are separate issues. A tutor should not respond to every hesitation by supplying a complete model answer.

Original practice example: explain a view

Question: 你觉得学生应该参加学校的清洁活动吗?为什么? (Should students take part in school cleaning activities? Why?)

A starting response could be 我觉得应该,因为大家都使用学校的设施。 The teacher can ask for a concrete example, then ask how that example supports the view. The purpose is to develop the student's own explanation, not memorise this answer.

Adapt the activity to the student's level and actual subject. This is an illustrative language exercise, not an official examination question or a prescribed scoring formula.

Chinese composition: ideas, structure and revision

Before adding vocabulary, check whether the reader can follow what happened and why it matters. Ask the student to summarise the central event and explain the purpose of each paragraph. If the sequence is unclear, decorative phrases will not fix it.

Original practice example: replace a vague feeling

A basic sentence is 我很紧张。 (I was nervous.) One possible expansion is 轮到我上台时,我握紧讲稿,深吸了一口气。 (When it was my turn to go on stage, I gripped my notes and took a deep breath.)

Discuss what the action reveals and whether it fits the scene. Then ask the learner to write a different sentence for a new situation. The aim is purposeful detail, not inserting the same phrase into every essay.

Chinese comprehension: reading, evidence and explanation

First check the meaning of the passage. Then identify what the question asks and which detail supports the answer. A student may copy a relevant sentence without explaining its connection to the question.

Original practice example: explain a reason

Passage: 小明发现同学没带雨伞,便把自己的雨伞递给了他。 Question: 小明为什么把雨伞递给同学?

The answer should connect the action to the classmate not having an umbrella. Ask the student to explain that link in their own words. If they miss the reason, check sentence understanding before assigning a harder passage.

Vocabulary and listening: revisit meaning in context

After learning a word, use it in a new spoken sentence or find it in a short passage. Check whether the student understands its role, rather than only its written form. For listening, revisit the part that caused confusion and discuss the clue that supports the answer.

Keep practice manageable and connected to the current target. The appropriate difficulty depends on the learner; a tutor should adjust rather than assume that longer exercises always mean better learning.

A useful correction includes another attempt

Ask the student to revise the original response, explain what changed and try an unfamiliar task. Record whether less prompting was needed. This helps separate remembering a corrected answer from learning a transferable skill.

Common questions

Should oral, composition and comprehension be taught separately?

Focused practice can help identify a problem, but skills can also support each other. Discussing an idea before writing or explaining a passage aloud may reveal where the learner needs help.

Are these examples official PSLE or SEC questions?

No. They are original illustrative exercises for discussing teaching. They are not past-year questions, official model answers or guarantees of marks.
