P1 and P2 Chinese tuition: sounds, characters and meaning
For a lower-primary pupil, ask the tutor to check several small tasks separately: listening to an instruction, reading familiar words, explaining a sentence and saying something about a picture. These observations help distinguish limited vocabulary from a difficulty recognising characters or expressing an idea.
Hanyu Pinyin and spelling practice can have a place, but ask how the student uses the language afterwards. Recognising a word in a new sentence is a more useful check than copying it accurately several times. A manageable activity is to discuss one familiar situation and form a short spoken sentence before writing.
P3 and P4 Chinese tuition: reading and sentence building
When a child can read a passage but struggles with comprehension answers, check whether they understand the question and can locate a relevant clue. A tutor should explain why the clue answers the question, rather than simply dictate the corrected answer.
For writing, start with a clear sequence of events. Ask the child what happened, why it mattered and how the situation changed. A short paragraph revised carefully can reveal more learning than a long composition filled with expressions the child cannot explain. See our oral, composition and comprehension guide for worked teaching examples.
P5 and P6 Chinese tuition: prepare for PSLE
By upper primary, discuss the balance between repairing persistent gaps and applying skills to examination tasks. More timed papers are not necessarily the next step for a child who still misreads key sentences. Ask the teacher to explain which skills need explicit teaching and when timed work becomes useful.
Confirm the actual subject: Chinese, Foundation Chinese or Higher Chinese. These are distinct courses, not interchangeable labels. Our PSLE Chinese tuition guide explains how to organise the enquiry, while the Higher Chinese guide addresses that separate pathway.
How to review primary Chinese tuition
Keep a dated piece of independent work before lessons begin. Agree on a specific goal, such as explaining a character's reason using evidence, or writing sentences in a logical order. At the review, compare a new task of similar difficulty and note how much prompting was needed.
Ask what happens if the same error returns. The answer should describe a teaching adjustment, not only another worksheet. Check that the schedule leaves time for school work, rest and brief practice. A child progressing with current school support may not need extra tuition.

Common questions
Is a general Chinese class enough for a weak foundation?
Ask how the teacher identifies and revisits missing skills. A standard class may fit, but a child who cannot access the class material may need a more adjusted pace.
When should PSLE-focused tuition begin?
There is no universal starting year. Choose support based on the pupil's current gaps, school feedback and workload; P5 or P6 labels alone do not establish the right plan.
